Planet of The Apes - 05 The Legacy

The guys are making their way through the woods and spot the ruined city of Oakland. They go in and find a science institute and go inside where they find a buried vault door. They dig it out and Alan opens the door, where they find a vacuum-sealed chamber with a single electronic console they don’t recognize from their time. They turn it on and it projects a hologram of a white-clad scientist who speaks of their depositing the sum of their scientific knowledge in a series of vaults throughout the world. The scientist talks about the Oakland vault but the power unit wears out. They need copper pipe and sulfuric acid to recharge the battery and start scavenging among the other humans.

They get what they need but a gorilla patrol spots them and they separate to lose the pursuit. The gorillas pursue – Galen hides in a building while Alan runs through an alleyway and sprains his ankle as a young boy looks on. Alan limps to cover and find a woman who tells him to leave but ends up offering him refuge. The boy approaches the gorillas and offers Alan’s location in return for one day’s food. They agree and take Alan along with the woman.

Alan is brought before Urko and Zaius, who have traveled there immediately to interrogate him. Alan doesn’t give up the others’ location despite Urko’s physical interrogation, while Pete and Galen look for him. Zaius advises Urko to keep Alan alive to bring in the other two, and reveals he has a plan. The gorillas capture the boy, Kraik, and offer him more food to ask Alan questions…and tell them the answers.

Alan is tossed into a faux castle belonging to a human back in the old days, and finds himself with the woman, Arn, and Kraik. He wonders why the apes are holding them together while Pete takes out a patrolman and interrogates him for Alan’s location. Neither Arn nor Kraik have any answers for Alan and when he tries to escape the gorillas shoot at him…but only to keep him inside. Alan figures he’s being used as bait but that it won’t work since he told the others to work on fixing the projector. Pete is working on the battery where Galen insists on rescuing Alan. Zaius considers a photo of Alan’s family and reassures Urko that his plan is working – Alan will think of Kraik and Arn as his own family, lower his defenses, and tell Kraik what they want to know.

Alan binds with Kraik while Pete works to finish the battery, and promises to go after Alan after they find the stored information. Urko decides to keep searching for Pete and Galen despite Zaius’ disapproval, and the prisoners eat and Kraik demands more food while pushing Alan for info on his friends. He backs off while Arn talks about her dead husband Tomar and the two grow closer. Later he builds a model airplane and Kraik asks him about flying, but the boy doesn’t believe him. Alan tells him how the information they’re looking for can mean a better life for all the humans, then makes a pouch for Kraik to carry his things in. Alan pushes Kraik to start doing chores and the boy isn’t too thrilled. Alan then tells them about the sealed vault and sends Kraik off to get fire wood. He talks with Arn about her life, then confronts Kraik about taking the model. Kraik destroys the plane in a fit of anger and runs off.

Kraik goes to the gorilla captain and tells him what Alan told him. Kraik comes back later and admits to Arn what he’s done. They tell Alan who figures they’ve left, but is worried the apes will find the projector and turn it on. A repentant Kraik tells them he knows a way off but didn’t want to leave because of the food. Kraik goes back outside and tells one of the soldiers that Alan had a gun that he threw out the window. He lures the gorilla over and Alan drops on the ape, knocking him out.

Urko checks out the science institute and returns after finding nothing, but Zaius figures they must have left Alan a clue and demands Urko take him there. Alan gets there with Kraik and Arn and finds the vault, which Galen and Pete covered back over. Alan turns on the projector but is interrupted by the arrival of Zaius and the gorillas. They hide nearby while the apes find the exposed vault and turn on the projector. The projection announces the location of the Oakland vault in a railway station and Alan overhears it and takes off with Kraik providing them with a shortcut. Galen and Pete are accessing the storage vault’s computer and Alan gets there first and warns them to get out.

They slip out into the street as the apes arrive and enter, and Zaius orders its destruction. Urko says the power would be safe with them, but Zaius warns the knowledge could spread out of control and one of Urko’s officers might get hold of it. Urko relents and orders his men to destroy the vault’s contents, then goes back to the castle to kill Alan, unaware of the surprise awaiting him.

The guys drop off Arn and Kraik at the village of her dead husband’s brother. Kraik wants Alan to stay but he begs off to continue their quest.
